In this bonus episode, I review an incredible book called Stronger by Poorna Bell.

Now, I don’t know about you but I have really been struggling to read since the pandemic began. Although I was raised an avid reader, I feel as though my attention span has diminished over the last 18 months and I have been relying largely on audiobooks so, the fact that I absolutely devoured this book is significant.

I pre-ordered Poorna Bell’s latest book – Stronger – months ago and, since it arrived last week, I haven’t been able to put it down. It is the best fiction book I have read in years. Part memoir, part manifesto, I want to buy this book for every woman and girl I know.

The book is based on the author’s foray into amateur powerlifting after her husband died by suicide. And the correlation between physical and mental health resonated strongly with me.

You are strong. I already know that about you. But, if you want it, there is limitless potential for you to be stronger. – Poorna Bell

Poorna Bell is a skilled journalist and author, who weaves her personal experiences with data, academic research, and stories from a range of people who identify as women. And, in doing so she speaks to the importance of physical activity for women while highlighting the many socio-economic factors which preclude or exclude their participation.

This book is for any woman who was ever picked last for teams at school, who has ever avoided physical activity because she felt self-conscious or who is intimidated by mainstream fitness spaces.
